Disappointing Jesus and a Little Girl

I have a hand made sign that reads “JESUS really really really really really really really really really really really really really REALLY Loves You!!!!”  I enjoy carrying that sign as a way to engage people in a conversation about God and Jesus.

I had the sign in San Francisco one time.  I was just walking along Fishermen’s Wharf and a young family was walking towards me.  There was a mom and dad and a young boy about 12 years old and a small girl around 7 or 8.  The little girl saw the sign and started to beam.  Her little face lit up with excitement as she turned to her father and asked, “Daddy what does that mean?!?”

Surprisingly her father scowled and said “It doesn’t mean anything!”

To say the least I was shocked.  Being a middle aged man I was shocked for a number of reasons. First it was hard for me to believe that, seemingly, an 8 year old girl had not heard the story of Jesus.  How He loved her so much that He came down from Heaven to die just for her. Secondly, I was shocked that a father would somehow be offended by a sign that simply communicated the deep, deep love of Jesus.

Now don’t get me wrong.  I completely get the fact that people don’t like being preached at.  I get that people don’t want other people “ramming their religion down their throats.”  But I wasn’t doing that.  I was simply trying to remind people that Jesus has loved, does love, and always will love them.

I hope one day that that father and his little girl will one day experience the love of Jesus. There is absolutely nothing like it, and it’s what all this is about anyway.

I’m not sure I understand your comment. The post was not at all political. It was sociological. Maybe you missed my point?
